How does a Christian lose their fire for God? Spiritual apathy rarely announces its arrival. It can creep into our lives so quietly that, before we know it, the zeal we once carried for Jesus has faded and, in some ways, we’ve forfeited it. In Part 2 of Conversations With My Dad: Reflections on a 40-Year Journey Through the Desert, my dad and I continue our honest pursuit of finding the Holy Fire within the American church family. This time, we’re talking about apathy. How does a follower of Christ go from being on fire for Jesus to becoming indifferent toward the things of God? And what about those who have spent years faithfully attending church, doing all the things Christians are supposed to do, yet have never really experienced that fire? We talk about the world’s influence, disappointment, suffering, and how our hearts can grow weary along the journey. My dad also opens up about a deeply painful season in his own life and what it revealed about brokenness and surrender. This isn’t a conversation about pointing fingers at the church. It’s an invitation to examine our own hearts, recognize where we may have grown comfortable, and ask the Lord to reveal what needs to change. In this episode, we discuss:
- What spiritual apathy looks like in the life of a believer
- How Christians slowly lose their hunger and zeal for God
- The influence of the world on our relationship with Jesus
- How suffering, disappointment, and unmet expectations can affect our faith
- The difference between religious activity and a genuine pursuit of God
- Recognizing apathy and inviting God to begin His refining work
We also wrestle with James 4:4 and what Scripture says about friendship with the world. In our first conversation, we began with my dad’s encounter with Jesus and the foundation of faith that followed. Here, we’re examining what happens when that fire begins to fade. But recognizing apathy is only the beginning. In Part 3, we’ll dig deeper into the idols we let take root in our hearts, the things we’ve learned to tolerate, and what it means to surrender them to God. We hope you’ll join us for the conversation.
